Electric Car Charger Installation

With electric cars becoming more popular in Georgia – the need for EV car charging installation is also increasing. About 85% of electric car owners utilize the option to install a home charging station. Proper installation is necessary, as the home’s electrical system must be able to support the additional load.

For electric vehicle owners that utilize home charging stations – an electric vehicle charger is the product that is required. An EV charger is any device that brings AC electricity from your mains source to be converted to DC electricity in your electric vehicle battery. There are several different types of EV chargers, and it’s important to choose the right one for your needs.

  • Level 1 (120 Volt AC)

Uses the on-board charge station that comes with the car. For Level 1 charging, you just have to plug it into a dedicated 120-volt, single phase separate circuit 20-Amp three prong grounded outlet - and the circuit should be installed by a licensed electrician (Servicewise Electric). Although it depends greatly on the vehicle you are charging, it typically takes between 8 to 14 hours to fully charge a vehicle. The charging current is about the same as a standard blow dryer, so it won’t put a burden on your existing electrical service. Obviously, the biggest disadvantage is the length of time it takes to recharge a vehicle. You will need to install a grounded 120 –Volt 20 Amp separate circuit to power the level 1 car charging station.

  • Level 2 (208-220-230 Volt AC)

Level 2 increases the charge power by 5x and decreases the typical full charge time down to 4-8 hours, the main advantage for Level 2 Charging is speed. Level 2 charging is the most popular system used by home owners as it offers a quick charge time – half the time of Level 1. You will need to install a dedicated 220-volt single phase grounded separate circuit to power the Level 2 charging station. This circuit is similar to a 220 volt electric dryer circuit.

  • Level 3 (DC fast charging)

DC fast charging is the standard for public electric car charging stations. Pumping 40 miles worth of charge into an electric vehicle every 10 minutes, DC fast charging is the most efficient and rapid form of charging. However, these stations are very expensive with a price tag of around $100,000 and use more power than your house.

Electric car charger wiring for your home in Georgia

Wiring is an important step. Locating an accessible power source and making sure a home’s system can handle the additional load is part of the initial installation process. Additional steps include:

  • Deciding whether you want to use Level 1 or Level 2 charging
  • Determining the best location for the equipment
  • Choosing the specific brand of station you wish to use
  • If desired, installation of a 240-volt line to an area below the charging station
  • Ensuring that the new circuit has a capability of 50 Amps
  • Having Servicewise Electric install a socket (A NEMA 6-50 is used in the majority of charging states that are not hard wired)
  • Installing the equipment after the garage is properly wired
